My initial project plan focusses on the twin themes of immersive and experiential design, where both concepts are about creating memories in a physical or virtual environment.
Immersive activities employ tools such as lighting effects, smell and noise to create tangible experiences (eventgenioso.com). Immersive design may include the use virtual reality or technologically advanced computer systems to construct interactive, conceptualised environments. In contrast, Koepfler and Evans (2015) suggested that as people become more connected, experience designers should consider utilising shallow-interactive design to maintain human-focussed interactions.
Experiential design focusses on the development of ‘experiences’, but not necessarily in a created environment. Berridge (2007) summises that everything could technically be an described as an experience, therefore, experiential design needs to create something beyond the ordinary, where the end result is to create an emotionally memorable encounter (Chertoff et al, 2008).
The use of experiential design is a developing area which Adams (in Perret, 2016), suggests is partly due to growth of millennial consumers, who’s use of social media is expressed through ‘show and tell’, about sharing tangible experiences through a digital narrative. This is supported by Roland’s (2015) assessment that, the growth of the Steampunk style, has been a response to an increasingly digitised world and a desire to understand how products actually function.
Through my research I will investigate immersive and experiential design in more detail and aim to develop tangible solutions to engage people about with product(s), whilst developing their knowledge and creating memories.
